Reading is a fundamental skill that every child needs to learn. I am a firm believer that children learn best when they are actively engaged and having fun, which is why I believe in the importance of making reading enjoyable for your child at a very early age. In this blog, I will be sharing my top three tips to help your child fall in love with books and reading.
Make Reading Fun With These 3 Tips
Tip #1 There MUST be a variety!
I cannot stress enough the importance of having a large variety of books for your children to choose from. After all, children’s interest changes very often, and you must be ready to adapt. Always pay attention to the things your children are most attracted to or talk about often. When possible take them along on trips to the library or book store to pick up their favorite books. Used books are also great!! About 95% of our library was furnished with books from second-hand stores or sites like let-go and Facebook Marketplace.
Tip #2 Act The Stories Out
Acting stories out is tons of fun for the kids and hilarious to watch! While the kids enjoy making silly voices and mimicking the characters of their favorite books, they are also building a personal connection with each character and the choices the characters make.
Tip #3 Vooks
One of my favorite homeschool resources is Vooks. Vooks is a kid-safe, ad-free streaming library of read-along, animated storybooks. The great part about this service is that it’s a kid-friendly app that can be watched on their ipads, tablets, or TV. Vooks has become a part of our morning routine. Usually, the boys watch 1-2 stories then we make a summary of what they watched to ensure comprehension and reinforce the story’s content. Retelling stories is one of the best ways to help early readers with comprehension and encourages them to fully understand the meaning of the text.
So there you have it! These are my top three tips on how I encourage my children to love books and reading. I hope these tips help your little ones as well!
